Zenith Energy’s Executive Chairman, Doug Walker, and Managing Director and CEO, Hamish Moffat, recently held a productive meeting with Hon. Reece Whitby MLA, Minister for Energy, Environment, and Climate Action. Discussions centred around Zenith Energy’s role as a leading enabler of the energy transition and achieving Net Zero emissions in the markets where we operate – mining and urban microgrids.

In the past 18 months, Zenith has contracted and commenced construction of the most of Western Australia’s high renewable energy fraction hybrid power solutions for remote off-grid mines and grid-connected urban microgrids in Western Australia’s South West Interconnected System (SWIS).

Zenith has also been collaborating with stakeholders in WA’s Goldfields on development of a power solution to provide the region with affordable energy security and a fast track to Net Zero. These outcomes align with the State’s intent to avoid the recurrence of protracted blackouts in Kalgoorlie experienced earlier this year, and to introduce more renewable energy, particularly from the Northern Goldfields into the SWIS.

Mr. Moffat, Managing Director and CEO of Zenith, said the development aims to deliver Traditional Owners meaningful participation in the Energy Transition; for miners more affordable and sustainable renewable energy; and for the region and state an economic boost by activating land for downstream processing of critical and battery minerals.

PoweringWA, which was recently set-up within Energy Policy WA are seeking support from Commonwealth programs such the Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS) and Rewiring the Nation to facilitate a more renewable and reliable power system for the Goldfields.

Significant Milestones at Zenith Energy

Significant Milestones at Zenith Energy

Last month Zenith Energy made two key announcements that have put a spotlight on our growth ambitions while also highlighting our ability to make strategic decisions to position our company at the forefront of Australia’s energy transition.

October 10, 2022

Solar PV

Last month Zenith Energy made two key announcements that have put a spotlight on our growth ambitions while also highlighting our ability to make strategic decisions to position our company at the forefront of Australia’s energy transition.

We proudly confirmed the acquisition of Peel Renewable Energy as our first non-resources asset and announced Zenith as the recipient of a Letter of Award from Liontown Resources to Build, Own and Operate what is expected to become the largest remote off-grid renewable energy hybrid power station in the country.

Both announcements represent forward steps on our journey to Net Zero, highlighting our commitment to increasing the proportion of renewable generation in our portfolio and further assist our clients in their journey to decarbonise.

The Liontown Award will enable us to demonstrate our innovation, flexibility, and expertise in delivering low-carbon hybrid power solutions, while also once again raising the industry benchmark in renewable energy integration.

Furthermore, with the thermal components of the power station designed to operate in ‘engine off’ mode at various times, it’s another opportunity for Zenith to showcase the ability of renewables to deliver reliable, continuous supply, to power an entire mining operation.

This aligns with the acquisition of Peel Renewable Energy, which will also see Zenith take on responsibility for the Peel Renewable Microgrid, a vertically integrated generation, distribution, and retail business, supplying power to the Peel Business Park, south of Perth.

It will allow Zenith to leverage our knowledge of islanded generation infrastructure, capitalising on our expertise and skillset, while also providing future opportunities for growth and expansion.

Both projects will also allow Zenith to demonstrate that our innovative power solutions work in real world environments, providing confidence to the sector overall.

It’s a key step in making renewable technologies more available, as it’s only once the technology is proven to be able to be successfully integrated and effective – and able to support industrial loads while also maintaining security of supply – that we can increase demand and allow our technology partners to develop economies of scale.

It’s an exciting time for Zenith and it’s clear we’re embarking on our next chapter of growth as a business, allowing us to continue to play a lead role in the energy transition, while also providing like-minded partners with a glide path to Net Zero.

Zenith Energy Hits Key Milestones at Warrawoona

Warrawoona is a unique project for Zenith, which we first highlighted earlier this year. It’s been an opportunity for us to showcase our expertise and ability to meet client expectations around reliability, security of supply and reducing overall emissions, while also taking into account the remote location and planning for various contingencies.

September 21, 2022

A few months ago, two 120 tonne LNG bullets made their way from Dampier to Warrawoona, the Caldius-operated mine site near Marble Bar, in what was a complex logistical journey and the next step in Zenith Energy’s commitment to reduce emissions on site.

The arrival of the LNG bullets marked a fresh milestone for the project as work on the gas-fuelled power station is finalised, with commissioning expected to be complete by the end of the month.

Warrawoona is a unique project for Zenith, which we first highlighted earlier this year.

It’s been an opportunity for us to showcase our expertise and ability to meet client expectations around reliability, security of supply and reducing overall emissions, while also taking into account the remote location and planning for various contingencies.

We’ve been consistently supplying power on site since March, after commissioning what is essentially the ‘back up’ diesel power station, which then allowed Calidus to complete its first gold pour in May.

However, in order to facilitate a reduction of emissions, work has also been progressing on a high efficiency gas/solar hybrid power station, which will significantly reduce diesel usage and also eventually overall LNG usage.

The remote location and particular geography on site has meant constructing two power stations and a 4MW DC Solar Farm hasn’t been without its challenges, and we’ve also had to manage external challenges such as supply chain delays, which impacted the expected arrival date of the LNG bullets.

The logistics around moving the bullets also had to be taken into consideration, requiring specialist equipment and personnel, as well as an intimate knowledge of the location to which they were travelling. It was a mammoth operation, taking two days in total, with the final 30 kilometres of gravel road into site taking almost a full day in itself.

However, despite all of this, Zenith is proud to be consistently meeting client expectations, hitting the original deadline for supply of power, and on track to integrate renewable energy generation before the end of the year.

As an ESG enabler for our clients, Zenith is continually working to develop ways to increase renewable penetration and have previously highlighted our collaborations with like-minded companies to ensure we have the technological solutions and expertise within our wheel-house.

We are seeing all this come to fruition at Warrawoona, and we’re also able to leave the door open for a potential expansion of solar penetration if required in the future.

It’s the latest example of Zenith’s commitment to supplying our clients with safe, secure, reliable power generation, and continuing on our journey to achieving Net Zero by 2035.

How an Investment in People is Helping to Deal with Key Challenges in the Industry

As the mining and resources industry – and others – continue to deal with Australia’s tight labour market, supply chain congestion and global uncertainty, we at Zenith Energy believe our ability to tackle these issues head on is the result of having the right people within our team, and a strong workplace culture.

August 16, 2022

As the mining and resources industry – and others – continue to deal with Australia’s tight labour market, supply chain congestion and global uncertainty, we at Zenith Energy believe our ability to tackle these issues head on is the result of having the right people within our team, and a strong workplace culture.

While supplying power to remote mine sites is a challenge in and of itself, the last two years has added pressure in other areas.

Recruitment has been our biggest issue of the past 24 months, and while I believe we’re through the worst of it now that Western Australia’s border has reopened, it’s still a very tight labour market.

Added to that is supply chain congestion and general global uncertainty, which is pushing up prices in many areas, and you can understand the difficulties we’re facing as a company.

However, we’re getting through it because at the heart of company is good, experienced people, and we strongly believe in the value of communication.

Zenith Energy has worked hard to build a strong workplace culture over the past 15 years, and it’s paying dividends.

Knowledge and accountability are among our core values, and we’re seeing this play out in what has been a challenging couple of years.

For example, where supply chain congestion has pushed back arrival times for vital infrastructure, we know we have the right people in place to demonstrate to clients that we are experienced at developing innovative solutions, and we can communicate those solutions effectively.

We invite our clients into our wheelhouse so they can see what we do, and how we do it. And that’s working well for us.

Our commitment to communication is also assisting in dealing with other key issues;

  • Recruitment: With WA’s unemployment rate sitting at 3.4% in June, and the national rate at 3.5%, recruitment is likely to be tough for a while longer. However, Zenith is also looking at employee incentives beyond money, offering training, upskilling and growth opportunities. This in turn creates longevity and loyalty among staff, further boosting the company culture.

  • Global Uncertainty: Aside from pushing up the cost of doing business, global uncertainty is also impacting commodity prices. The value of open, two-way communication between Zenith and our clients is essential to ensure we’re on the same page moving forward, and no one is surprised by sudden changes.

The rise in global fuel prices is also impacting the industry, and while Zenith is insulated somewhat by not supplying fuel in most instances, it’s resulting in some companies taking a fresh look at renewables.

While renewables can be seen as an expensive capital investment, the soaring cost of oil, diesel and gas means renewable power generation becomes a more attractive longer-term investment.

We’re also seeing technology advances making installation of renewables more cost-effective and time efficient compared to even a few years ago, which makes it more attractive again.

An emerging challenge we’re anticipating in coming years will be addressing the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) expectations of clients, especially in the context of meeting our own 2035 target for Net Zero.

But, the great thing about that challenge, is that once again we know we have the right people in place.

There are still many paths to travel, but we’re in a good spot as we have a lot of really smart people to take on that responsibility, and showcase their knowledge and experience. I’m confident we have some exciting times coming.

Cooperation and Collaboration – Why Working Together is Vital to Achieve Net Zero

With almost four decades of experience behind me, I’ve learned that in order for businesses to successfully achieve their goals, they must identify when it’s necessary to collaborate, rather than attempt to go it alone.

June 07, 2022

While it sounds simple, it can be a difficult concept for businesses to grasp and requires a certain level of self-reflection.

At Zenith Energy, we recognise there are several challenges that must be overcome to allow us to achieve Net Zero by our company-set target of 2035.

While Zenith has developed a team of highly experienced people with the industry knowledge to develop the solutions required, we are also acutely aware that to be successful, we need assistance from outside our company.

It’s for this reason that Zenith has embarked on a number of partnerships – including two we recently announced: the agreement with 5B to become a 5B Maverick System deployment partner, and also our collaboration with IGO to achieve 100 percent renewable power generation at the Nova nickel site in the WA Goldfields.

In each instance, Zenith was keen to partner with like-minded companies, who are also striving to reach decarbonisation milestones.

It allows us to work together, drawing on each other’s niche skills and expertise to develop a multi-faceted solution.

However, in order for it to be successful, it first requires us to recognise our own unique skill-set, and then search for collaborations that complement that skill-set and provide missing pieces of our particular puzzle.

It’s this pragmatic mindset that sits at the heart of our culture at Zenith and allows us to provide individualised power generation solutions to our clients.

I have previously spoken about Zenith’s ability to embrace the patchwork of people within our own organisation, with each employee bringing a particular set of circumstances and experiences to the table.

The same can be said of our industry, and it’s important that we embrace this wider patchwork where required, to empower Zenith in being able to reach our goals.

Business collaborations aren’t new, and in the case of Net Zero, it’s far too great a challenge for any one company to attempt on their own.

Instead, we must create partnerships that deliver mutual benefits, and enhance the delivery of skills to achieve a shared goal.

Zenith Energy Partnering with Tjiwarl Contracting Services and Carey Group Training to Provide Opportunities for Future Generations

At Zenith Energy, we don’t take our reputation as one of Australia’s leading power producers lightly, and we’re acutely aware of the need to continue to learn and grow as a company, not just in our methods of power generation, but also our engagement with the community.

May 18, 2022

Working in some of the most remote areas of the country, it’s important to us that we also engage with traditional owners of the land, which is why we are proud of our recent partnership established with Tjiwarl Contracting Services, marking the start of a mutually beneficial relationship.

Commercially, the agreement will see Zenith and TCS work together to deliver low carbon power solutions for miners and communities on Tjiwarl native title determined lands. It will also see the creation of Joint Venture Project entities which will assist in building the capacity and capability of TCS, with reserved scopes of work.

However, we are confident the partnership offers much more than this, and will go some way to providing a framework for future discussions with other Traditional Owner Groups in the near future.

Indigenous engagement is an area in which we as a company are consciously trying to do more, to ensure the language written into our contracts around Indigenous participation carries with it some substance, and produces a tangible result.

Tjiwarl Director and Native Title Holder Kado Muir said while the commercial aspects of the agreement are essential in providing economic opportunities for Aboriginal people on their land, the partnership also provides the basis of a culturally-grounded business model.

“By engaging in a relationship like this, you’re taking a traditional business model and business practice, and sitting across the table with a Traditional Owner Group, to build a new culturally-grounded business model.”

“An agreement like this shows Zenith is paving the way in supporting Tjiwarl to address socio-economic disadvantage, while also creating a new opportunity for Zenith employees to expand their cultural awareness and understanding.”

It’s this cross-cultural awareness that Zenith is working to expand and build on, not only through our partnership with Tjiwarl Contracting Services, but also through the development of a relationship with Carey Training Group.

Zenith will work with Carey Group Training to employ an Indigenous apprentice within our maintenance team, offering experience and learning opportunities backed up by culturally appropriate pastoral support.

While employed by Carey Group Training, the apprentice will be embedded within Zenith sites, with the ultimate aim of being employed by Zenith at the completion of the four-year program.

In the same way that we hope our work with TCS will provide valuable experience for Zenith moving forward, we are also confident our work with Carey Group Training will assist us in developing a culturally appropriate and inclusive workplace for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

We know that economic participation and development is paramount in enhancing and advancing the health and wellbeing of Indigenous people, which is why Zenith is also in the process of developing a Reconciliation Action Plan.

The plan is a recognition that there is still more work to do to ensure that we can provide culturally appropriate support in the workplace, and offer a higher level of cross-cultural awareness across all staff.

It’s clear that we stand to learn from the cultural knowledge of Traditional Owners and other Indigenous groups, so that we don’t just occupy space on country, but appreciate the rich history and background where our operations exist.

It’s this kind of knowledge sharing that has the ability to produce strong outcomes for Zenith and the groups we engage with, and provide a foundation for our continued reconciliation journey.

Why Zenith is Commited to Net Zero by 2035

At a time when some companies are only just starting to have serious conversations around decarbonisation and what that might look like, it is with pride, Zenith Energy can point to its past – having taken the initial steps on the journey to Net Zero almost a decade ago.

April 06, 2022

Since 2015 Zenith has quietly worked to develop the concepts needed to reduce emissions, while collaborating with like-minded clients and original equipment manufacturers to pilot and integrate the technology required.

We’ve taken significant steps forward, from being the first Independent Power Producer to introduce the industry-benchmark Jenbacher gas engine into the Australian market, right through to our most recent partnership with IGO – providing 100% renewable daytime penetration at Nova operations in the WA Goldfields.

While commercial drivers must be acknowledged as a major factor in the entire industry moving to decarbonise, at Zenith we are equally invested in the moral responsibility of reducing emissions.

As an organisation we have developed a workplace culture based on strong relationships, with an emphasis on honesty, integrity, and respect.

It is from this base that we can genuinely strive to make a difference, which is a major motivation in our proactive pursuit of Net Zero.

Our culture is one of innovation and growth, looking at perceived challenges as opportunities to develop our people and employ their unique skills to come up with unique solutions.

We have a deep conviction that not only should we reduce emissions, but we also want to be part of the developing solutions and bring our clients and the mining and resources industry on the journey to Net Zero with us.

Zenith has publicly stated its commitment to Net Zero by 2035, and while we acknowledge this is an ambitious target, it’s also one we are confident we have the ability to achieve together with our partners.

For some time now we have been actively involved in the development and piloting of various technologies, with the aim of being able to integrate these into our existing portfolio and on future projects.

It means we have built a solid reputation of being able to deliver innovative renewable solutions, able to respond to the needs of our clients at differing stages on their journey to Net Zero.

As the rate of change continues to accelerate throughout industry and globally, Zenith is committed to continuing to adapt, adopt and integrate emerging technologies, not just because we believe should, but because we believe we can.

Industry First 100% Renewable Energy Generation to go ahead on WA Mine

Zenith Energy is proud to build on our partnership with IGO – to begin powering the Nova mine-site 100% with renewable energy continuously for up to nine hours – in what will be an industry first.

January 21, 2022

Zenith currently own and operate a hybrid power station at the Nova nickel site in the WA Goldfields and will now expand the renewable generation to successfully operate ‘engine off’ for up to nine consecutive hours a day.

The site is currently powered through a combination of solar and diesel engine generation. By adding an additional 10MW of solar panels, and a 10MWh Battery Energy Storage System the system expansion will allow for 100 percent renewable power generation during daylight hours, weather conditions withstanding.

It’s an important next step on the journey to Net Zero and will set a new industry benchmark in terms of continuous operation of a mine site exclusively on renewable energy, and the integration of renewable energy into a mine site’s power system.

This project sends a strong message to the industry that powering an entire site completely on renewables is possible today.

Here at Zenith, we’re taking on the responsibility of not only developing the concepts to advance renewable solutions, but also piloting and proving the integration of technologies needed.

The Nova project will require us to integrate specific technology into the power system to provide inertia and stability, ensuring a continuous, reliable supply of power.

It will demonstrate a number of key points;

  • ‘Engine Off’ is Achievable: While there are currently non-industrial micro-grids operating on 100% renewables, the Nova project will prove it’s possible to use 100% renewables to meet the demands of an operational mine site. It will also prove the ability for sites to go ‘engine off’ for consecutive hours, without interruption to supply.
  • Battery Technology: The integrated Battery Energy Storage System is a key component of achieving ‘engine off’, storing sufficient power to ensure supply and reliability of the system is not compromised.
  • Relocatable Renewables: Once tenure at Nova ends, the solar panels and battery on site will be relocated to another site in what will be the first practical demonstration at scale of relocatable renewable energy. Proving this will assist in reducing barriers to capital expenditure, as renewable assets are used in multiple locations over their life span. It will also fast-track deployment of solar and further emission reductions across Zenith’s legacy portfolio.
  • Reducing Emissions is Realistic and Achievable on Existing Sites: The Nova project will highlight that 100% renewable energy penetration can be sustainably achieved and replicated on other sites across Australia now, without having to wait for further advancements in technology. For sites where renewables are already part of the power generation system, where land permits increasing renewable assets to go engine-off is a natural next step on the pathway to net zero.

While the Nova site will continue to rely on diesel generated power overnight and during inclement weather conditions, this project is a key next step on the journey to 100% renewable power generation 24 hours a day.

Zenith is already looking at what subsequent steps are needed to achieve this ultimate goal, including how we facilitate higher levels of renewable penetration, and integration of long duration storage.

It’s an exciting time not just for Zenith as a company, but for the entire industry. We’re making real progress in the decarbonization space and what that might look like for the sector moving forward.

Calidus Warrawoona Renewables

In order for the mining and resources sector to take meaningful steps toward cutting carbon emissions, it’s critical that companies have the option to integrate renewables into existing infrastructure, and existing power supply contracts.

December 25, 2021

In order for the mining and resources sector to take meaningful steps toward cutting carbon emissions, it’s critical that companies have the option to integrate renewables into existing infrastructure, and existing power supply contracts.

As one of Australia’s leading power producers, we at Zenith Energy are putting our flexible Power Purchase Agreements into action to help mines get on track with emission targets by replacing outdated technologies over time.

Zenith are currently building a 19MW power station at the Calidus Warrawoona mine site near Marble Bar in the Pilbara, with primary power provided by a 10MW LNG station with full diesel redundancy. The power station is set to become operational early to mid 2022.

As an ESG enabler for clients, Zenith are continually working to reduce emissions within our portfolio, and the introduction of our unique PPAs has been a key part of this.

The flexibility and transparency built into the contracts means as renewable technology becomes more economically viable, outdated technologies are replaced.

This is playing out at the Warrawoona site, where we recently committed to the supply, installation and commissioning of a 4MW DC Solar Farm, as well as a 3MW/3MWh AC Battery Energy Storage System.

The hybrid power station configuration will result in a reduction in gas use, which in turn results in a reduction in emissions, around 13 percent less than the initially contracted gas only station.

The decision to integrate solar generation and a battery storage system at the Warrawoona site is the result of ongoing discussions with the client about developing renewable solutions, and implementing onsite where possible.

It’s another step forward in the ongoing journey to Net Zero.

The Australian Government has now formalised a Net Zero target for 2050. However, Zenith Energy are confident we can achieve zero emissions sooner, by 2035, and have a number of motivations for doing so.

  • Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance: Zenith are committed to leading the way on sustainable power generation within the mining and resources sector and assisting clients in emission reduction.

  • Consumer/Investor Drive: Consumers and investors are increasingly making decisions based on the carbon footprint of companies, and are demanding businesses take on greater environmental responsibility. This is manifesting itself in the cost of funding for projects. Goldman Sachs have stated that the cost of carbon is being priced into the cost of funding. Zenith are listening to those conversations, and are actively working to decarbonise our current portfolio, and integrate renewable power generation on future projects.

  • Cost of CO2/Carbon Tariffs: Various countries are considering implementing carbon tariffs, as part of wider action on climate change, but also to ensure companies moving toward zero emissions aren’t disadvantaged in doing so. Impacts of carbon tariffs on Australian miners are widely forecast to have an impact.

  • For The Good of The Planet: A report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change found sustained global efforts to mitigate greenhouse gases are required, in order to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Zenith are committed to bringing clients on the Net Zero journey with us, and rather than wait for renewable solutions to be developed, we are proactively searching for answers.

As part of this Zenith are also working with Original Equipment Manufacturers to develop and test new technologies, to allow us to integrate these solutions as the technology is proven and becomes economically viable.

How Company Values Spark the Right Culture

As a 35 year veteran of the power generation industry, I’ve learned that companies cannot be successful long-term, without having the right culture in place.

December 22, 2021

While this will look a little different for each individual company, the essence remains the same in that you need engaged employees, and a strong set of values that are not only embraced by all staff, but are also actively on display from the people at the top.

As a co-founder of Zenith, I have personally looked to ensure that a key part of our company is the development of open and rewarding relationships, placing an emphasis on honesty and respect.

It is from this base that we can genuinely strive to make a difference, not only within the lives of our employees, but also in the world around us.

Zenith Energy has grown to become one of Australia’s leading independent power producers and we continue to look for ways in which we can do better. It’s one of the key reasons why we’re embarking on the journey to achieve Net Zero by 2035.

However, such an ambitious goal cannot be achieved without the support and commitment of the entire team, from the most junior of roles, right up to upper management.

Having the right set of values in place acts as a guide for the company’s strategic direction, business practices and decision making.

Safety: For the people and the environment. It’s a commitment to protecting the safety, health and wellbeing of our team, our contractors, our customers and the environment in which we operate.

Performance: Delivering sustainable energy solutions. Dedicated to providing safe, reliable and sustainable solutions with real benefits to our customers and our shareholders.

Accountability: Taking ownership. Valuing the ability of our people and our organisation to work diligently and honour our commitments, responsibly and with integrity.

Reliability: Consistency in the supply of energy. Inspiring confidence in our business model, our products and further enhancing our reputation in the market.

Knowledge: Innovative solutions and people. A commitment to continuous technical development and innovation of our products, services and our team.

We draw upon these values to deliver a can-do attitude, embracing challenges in the renewable energy and sustainability space, and becoming part of the solution.

Zenith is actively taking steps to decarbonise both our future and legacy clients, not only because our people believe we should, but because they believe we have the ability to create change.

An organisation is not a single person, but rather it is a patchwork of people, each bringing their unique set of circumstances and experiences to the table.

We at Zenith embrace that patchwork, and use it to empower the company in reaching key milestones on the journey to Net Zero.
