Zenith Energy Announces Landmark Renewable Power Project
Zenith Energy Announces Landmark Renewable Power Project
December 03, 2025
7min
This week Zenith Energy announced it has signed a landmark 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA), underpinning development of Australia’s largest renewable energy project for the mining sector.
The project will supply energy to Northern Star’s Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) Operations in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, and comprises 256MW of wind generation, 138MW of solar generation and 138MW/300MWh of battery energy storage.
Zenith will fund, build, own and operate the renewable power facilities which will deliver multiple benefits to Northern Star through lower power costs and higher energy reliability. The project will also contribute materially to emissions reduction at the KCGM Operations.
Zenith Energy Managing Director Hamish Moffat said the landmark PPA exemplified the energy transition taking place at scale in WA’s Goldfields, a region key to Australia’s critical and precious metals industry.
“This renewable energy solution provides Northern Star with cost-effective power while having the future potential to improve energy reliability for Kalgoorlie,” he said.
“Planned local content and collaboration with key community representatives will also make it a great example of a Just Energy Transition.
Mr Moffat said key design, engineering and procurement activities are already underway on the project which will take Zenith Energy’s contracted generation across Australia to beyond 1.4GW, more than 50% of which is renewable energy.
“The KCGM project provides a blueprint for what modern mining energy systems should look like; cost-effective, clean, scalable, reliable and delivery of real benefits to local and regional communities.”
Australian solar system manufacturer 5B has been selected to supply the 138MW solar farm, the largest of its kind deployed for an Australian mining operation. More than 230,000 solar panels will be used, deployed on 5B’s rapid-install Maverick platform manufactured in Australia at the company’s Adelaide facility.
Leading wind turbine supplier Goldwind Australia has been selected to provide wind turbines for the wind farm, which will be located approximately 10 kilometres outside of Kalgoorlie. The wind turbines will be amongst the largest in Australia, with the towers standing 150 metres high and a rotor diameter of 182 metres.
Zenith Energy will also source, own and operate a 138MW/300 MWh Battery Energy Storage System to optimise the delivery of renewable energy.
In addition to the PPA for renewable energy, Zenith Energy has entered a joint venture with Northern Star to supply 120MW of thermal generation to support the renewables and provide backup to KCGM, along with a 132kV transmission network and substations.
Together, the renewable and thermal generation projects will be known as the Eastern Goldfields Power Projects.
Zenith Energy will also build and operate the new thermal power station and transmission infrastructure under the terms of a 25-year arrangement.
Technology group Wärtsilä will supply 10 high-efficiency dual-fuel generators along with associated auxiliary equipment and control systems to power the thermal component of the project.
Wärtsilä’s technology includes its innovative capability to allow the generators to support grid stability. This supports increases in the use of renewables and can provide additional voltage and frequency support.
Adelaide based company RJE Global will supply key components of the 132kV Transmission system, including Power Transformers, as well as engineering, design and construction services.
Commissioning of the Eastern Goldfields Power Projects are anticipated to begin in mid-2027 subject to environmental and regulatory approvals.

Australia’s first National Climate Risk Assessment highlights a clear message: early action reduces long-term costs and protects what we value most.
At Zenith Energy, we view climate strategy as both a responsibility and an opportunity.
To align with the Australian Sustainability Reporting Standards (ASRS), we have begun preparations to disclose climate-related risks, governance, strategy, and performance metrics in FY27. A climate scenario analysis is currently underway to evaluate our resilience under different climate futures and support strategic decision-making.
We’re assessing risks and opportunities across short, medium, and long-term horizons— insights that will directly inform our Climate Change Strategy and strengthen our governance and risk management processes.

One of the turbines has already been commissioned and is undergoing it is reliability run.
These turbines form part of the new 65 MW Hybrid Power Station that Zenith Energy is delivering for Lynas. The station combines gas, solar, wind and battery storage to provide reliable power while significantly reducing emissions.
When fully operational, Mt Weld will be able to run in engine-off mode during periods of high renewable generation — meaning the site can operate entirely on renewables for extended periods.
The installation of the turbines is a key step in moving towards that goal and in supporting Lynas Rare Earths’ decarbonisation pathway.
