Newmont’s Tamami Gold Mine is an underground mine located 540 km north-west of Alice Springs, Northern Territory, Australia.
Project Background
Newmont’s Tanami Gold Mine is an underground mine located 540 km north-west of Alice Springs, Northern Territory, Australia.
Zenith currently operates two power stations at the Newmont Tanami site; the Dead Bullock Soak (DBS) station and the Granites Power Station (GTS).
The two stations are located 42km apart and are joined by 66kV overhead powerlines.
The two power stations combined to have a capacity of 101.5MW and were commenced in 2018.
Renewable Integration
In 2020 Zenith begun the “T2 Expansion” at Tanami. This expansion includes the installation of a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and additional gas generating units.
Once the expansion has been completed, the total Tanami project will comprise of the following:
3 x Wartsila 8.7MW 20V34 Dual Fuel Generating Sets
2x Wartsila 9.8MW 30V34 Gas Generating Sets
4x 2.4MW Diesel Generating Sets
11x 3.4MW Gas Generating Sets
1 x 9.2MW / 9MWh Wartsila BESS
The BESS system will address a cyclic load demand and operate in parallel with the existing gas power station, and further reduce its carbon footprint.
